Welcome to Colombia
Colombia is a true paradise for travelers thanks to its wild rivers, hidden coral reefs and snowy peaks that are all waiting to be explored by adventure seekers. The 3,000km coastal waters around this paradise are good and the prices are low, this fact makes it an ideal location for anyone just learning to scuba dive. You’ll find operators offering week-long PADI courses on the extensive coast, but especially on the islands of San Adres and Providencia (where you’ll also find the third-largest barrier reef in the world) and around Santa Marta and Taganga. A week’s course costs around COP$650,000, but always check out the operator’s reputation prior to registering for a course. Don’t hesitate to ask other divers for recommendations of operators and be sure to enquire about the PADI or NAUI accreditation and instructor-student ratios of the centre before undertaking lessons. Snorkelling is another activity that is popular and good on the island.
There are a number of Class II-IV rapids that can be found on the numerous rivers where enthusiasts of white-water rafting are guaranteed to find a challenge they’ll enjoy. If you’re after a calmer trip, head to the river near San Agustin.
Colombia is an ideal location for hiking with its variety of 7-day adventure trips in Parque Nacional de Cocuy, excursions to the incredible Ciudad Perdida ruins, and the equally breathtaking, although shorter, travels in the coffee country around Manizales and Salento.
Like many countries, football is a favourite among Colombians and the country is a motherland to many of the continent’s skilled players. Another national pastime is cycling. Colombians regularly participate in such events as the Tour de France.
