Tubbataha

Overview

The Tubbataha Natural Park also known as Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is a protected area of the Philippines located in the middle of the Sulu Sea.

Description

A 10- to 15-hour boat ride from Puerto Princesa are the Tubbataha Reefs, a marine protected reserve often compared to the Galapagos Islands. It was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1993 and is home to hundreds of species of seabirds and fish, including mantas, whale sharks and the full gamut of pelagic marine life. The season for visiting Tubbataha runs from mid-March through to mid-June.

Highlights at Tubbataha include Shark Airport, a steep dropoff that attracts whitetip and grey reef sharks, leopard sharks, hawksbill and green turtles; Malayan Wall, with occasional hammerhead sightings; and Amos Rock, a gorgonian-fan-covered wall that's another shark spot.
