Thredbo

Overview

Thredbo is an alpine village and ski resort in the Snowy Mountains of southeastern Australia. The Kosciuszko Express chairlift provides access to ski runs and offers panoramic mountain views year-round.

Description

The Mount Kosciuszko summit walk leads to the top of Australia’s highest peak. Wildflowers dot the mountains of Kosciuszko National Park in spring and summer. The trout-filled Thredbo River winds through the village.

Thredbo is the closest you can get to an alpine playground lifestyle in Oz. Located just on the snowline in the Kosciuszko National Park in southern New South Wales. Thredbo is a year-round resort town for skiing and snowboarding in the winter and bushwalking and mountain biking in the summertime.

Known for having the longest run (the 5.9-kilometer Supertrail from Karels T-bar to Friday Flat), groomed trails, snowmaking facilities, a variety of terrain parks, and the coolest after-hours scene, Thredbo and the Village is the snow location of choice for dedicated ski bunnies. With the majority of the terrain zoned for intermediate skiers (67 percent), hone your technique in the picturesque Merrits area with wide tree-lined trails and smooth corduroy. First-timer? No problems. As well as the Snow Sports School, beginners can get their ski or snowboarding legs on the gentle Friday Flat slope with a slow-speed quad chair and Snow Runner conveyor to get to the top with ease. For the seasoned pros, ride the ‘Big 5’ longest runs: Funnel Web, World Cup, Supertrail, Village Trail, and High Noon-Cruiser.

Thredbo Village has all the shopping, dining, entertainment, and amenities you could possibly need for a snow or summer vacay including a heated swimming pool. The Village is renowned for its awesome party atmosphere with most of the action happening in the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. There’s plenty of in-resort ski-in, ski-out accommodation in the area from lodges and luxury apartments to self-contained units and hotels.

Thredbo is around six hours drive from both Sydney and Melbourne, and one hour drive from Cooma. The closest airports are the Snowy Mountains Airport, with a shuttle to Thredbo, or Canberra Airport, and then a two-and-a-half-hour drive to Thredbo. Coaches also travel from Sydney and Canberra to Thredbo with free shuttle buses to get you between the car parks and Thredbo Village in winter.
