Shizuoka area

Overview

Shizuoka, a Japanese prefecture on central Honshu’s Pacific coast, is home to 3,776m-tall Mt. Fuji, Japan’s highest peak. Within this iconic volcano's foothills are the ancient Fujisan Hongu Sengen shrine and the Shiraito and Otodome waterfalls.

Description

Shizuoka City in central Shizuoka Prefecture is perfect for outdoor lovers as it is surrounded by numerous mountains, lakes, and rivers. Like many other cities in the prefecture, Shizuoka City produces a lot of green tea and strawberries.

Many historic shrines and roads line Shizuoka City that can be easily accessed via the city’s convenient railway system. The Tokaido Shinkansen also makes a stop at Shizuoka City.

For visitors eager to soak in the atmosphere, Shizuoka hosts the Daidogei World Cup every November. Regarded as the biggest event in Shizuoka, the world cup is an annual international busker's festival where performers come from all over the world and perform around the city.

Fuji itself, crossed with trails, is a major hiking destination. To the south, the Izu Peninsula is known for its beaches, such as Shimoda, and onsen (hot spring) resorts.
