Senj

Overview

Senj is a town on the upper Adriatic coast in Croatia, in the foothills of the Mala Kapela and Velebit mountains. The symbol of the town is the Nehaj Fortress which was completed in 1558.

Description

The historic walled town of Senj is the largest town on the coast between Rijeka and Zadar. In the 16th century it became a base for the Uskoks: Croats driven from their homes by the Ottoman invasion. They became a feared fighting force, harassing both Turkish and Venetian vessels with their own pirate fleet, painted red and black – the colours of blood and death. Their castle is the main reason to stop here en route to somewhere else.
