Saaremaa

Overview

Saaremaa is an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea. It's known for its beaches, spas and traditional villages. Its southern capital, Kuressaare, is home to medieval Kuressaare Castle.

Description

It houses the Saaremaa Museum, with exhibits on Estonian culture and handicrafts, plus weapons in the castle fortress. Nearby, the Kaali meteorite crater field includes a cluster of ancient craters and a museum of meteor remains. To Estonians, Saaremaa (literally ‘island land’) is synonymous with space, spruce and fresh air – and bottled water, vodka and killer beer. Estonia’s largest island (roughly the size of Luxembourg) is still substantially covered in forests of pine, spruce and juniper, while its windmills, lighthouses and tiny villages seem largely unbothered by the passage of time.
