Overview
The Chiriquí Viejo River is a river in Panama. It should not be confused with the Chiriquí Nuevo to the east. There are several dams and hydroelectric projects on this river, including the Bajo de Mina and Baitún.
Description
The Río Chiriquí Viejo is located west of Panama, specifically west of the Province of Chiriquí, near the border with Costa Rica. It has a length of 161 km and a basin of 1,376 km².1 The river is born near Cerro Punta, in the Chirica highlands and runs west to Plaza de Caisán, in the Renacimiento district, then runs parallel to the border tica, until it approaches only about 100 meters from the borderline in Paso Canoas, then it advances to the southeast joining other rivers such as the Jacú and the Gariché, ending at the Charco Azul Bay, at the height of Baco, about 15 km to the east from Puerto Armuelles.
