Description

Nagara River is one of the 3 "Kiso Sansen" that flow through Nobi Heiya (Nobi Plain). Its length is about 166km, and along with the Kakita River, and the Shimanto River is referred to as one of Japan’s 3 largest clear streams. Upstream of the Nagara Bridge there is a pathway established where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll while enjoying the river and Mt. Kinka-zan. Around 400 Yoshino cherries have been planted along the river and during the cherry season, the river is bustling with visitors.

There is a particular fishing method called Ukai that has a 1300 year history. This is done along the Nagara River. These cormorant fishers are called "ujo" and they use specially trained cormorant birds to catch small fish such as ayu. Ukai happens from May 11th to October 15th every night.  You can watch the Ukai fisherman and their birds from the previously mentioned walkway or from atop a pleasure boat, and the view of the Ukai fisherman from atop a pleasure boat is particularly wonderful.
