Overview
Lónsöræfi is a wilderness area in south-east Iceland. The region is characterised by its varied geological formations. These mostly date from a period between 5 to 7 million years ago, when the volcano Kollumúlaeldstöðvar was active.
Description
If you’re in Iceland to get in touch with your inner hermit, the remote, rugged nature reserve Lónsöræfi could be on your hit list. This protected wilderness, inland from Stafafell, contains some colourful rhyolite mountains and, at 320 sq km, is one of Iceland’s largest conservation areas.
