Overview
Lake Nasser is a vast reservoir in southern Egypt and northern Sudan. It is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. Before construction, Sudan was against the building of Lake Nasser because it would encroach on land in the North.
Description
Lake Nasser, one of the world’s largest artificial lakes, covers an area of 5250 sq km and is 510km long and between 5km and 35km wide. The lake was created as a result of the construction of the High Dam across the Nile between 1958 and 1970. The contrast between this enormous body of water and the remote desert stretching away on all sides makes Lake Nasser a place of austere beauty, a vast space of total tranquillity and silence. Cruise boats take several peaceful days to go from Aswan to Abu Simbel, visiting the Great Temple of Ramses II and the other temples that were moved to higher ground.
