Hinchinbrook Island

Overview

Hinchinbrook Island lies east of Cardwell and north of Lucinda, separated from the northern coast of Queensland, Australia by the narrow Hinchinbrook Channel.

Description

Australia’s largest island national park (399 sq km) is a holy grail for walkers, but getting here requires advance planning. Granite mountains rise dramatically from the sea and wildlife creeps through the foliage. The mainland side is dense with lush tropical vegetation, while long sandy beaches and tangles of mangrove curve around the eastern shore. Hinchinbrook forms part of the traditional lands of the Biyaygiri people, who called the island Pouandai.
