Guánica dry forest

Overview

The Guánica State Forest is a subtropical dry forest located in southwest Puerto Rico. The area was designated as a forest reserve in 1919 and a United Nations Biosphere Reserve in 1981.

Description

The Guánica State Forest & Biosphere Reserve (Bosque Estatal de Guánica, in Spanish) is a great example of a dry forest, as compared to the rain forests found elsewhere on the island. It gets only about 30 inches of rain per year. Compare that to the 200+ inches that fall on El Yunque annually. It is considered the best-preserved, subtropical forest and the best example of dry forest in the Caribbean.
