Chachapoyas

Overview

Chachapoyas is a town in northern Peru, in a valley surrounded by cloud forest. Its Plaza de Armas features a bronze fountain and colonial buildings like the Palacio Municipal.

Description

The town is a gateway to archaeological sites such as Kuélap, a walled city with hundreds of buildings from the ancient Chachapoyas civilization. North of town, the huge Gocta Waterfall is set amid jungle sheltering toucans and monkeys.  Isolated for centuries in the cloud forests of northern Peru, mellow Chachapoyas appears to be a town on the cusp of wider discovery. For vintage travelers, the ignition of interest will come as no surprise. Straddling the transitional zone between the high Andes and the Amazon Basin, 'Chacha' and its surroundings have long felt like a box of hidden treasure waiting to be dug up.
