Description
The pretty town of Brandenburg an der Havel, some 50km west of Berlin, was shaped by water. Set amid a pastoral landscape of lakes, rivers and canals, its historical centre is peppered with stately examples of medieval Gothic red-brick architecture. First settled by Slavs in the 6th century, Brandenburg was a bishopric in the early Middle Ages and the regional capital until the 15th century. Today it's an easy day trip from Berlin or a lovely base for exploring the region by bicycle or boat.
