Overview
Turrialba is a small city in Cartago Province of Costa Rica with an estimated population of 35,618. The main industries are textiles, agriculture and tourism.
Description
The Pacuare and Reventazón Rivers are notable for whitewater rafting, making Turrialba a mecca for the sport. When the railway shut down in 1991, commerce slowed, but Turrialba nonetheless remained a regional agricultural center where local coffee planters could bring their crops to market. And with tourism on the rise in Costa Rica in the 1990s, this modest mountain town soon became known as the gateway to some of the best white-water rafting on the planet. By the early 2000s, Turrialba was a hotbed of international rafters looking for Class V thrills. For now, the Río Pacuare runs on, but its future is uncertain.
