A ceremony in which two people are brought together in a union by marriage, the traditions and rules associated with marriage vary greatly and are different between every culture, group, religion and even social class. The things that most marriages contain however are an exchange of vows between the couple, an exchange of gifts (rings for example) and the public announcement and certification of marriage by a public figure. Accompanying the varying traditions are variations in the expected attire and post ceremonial celebrations. During the ceremony it is common for religious texts to be read and for music to be played at critical moments. The traditionally western ‘white wedding’ where the bride wears a white dress and veil, was popularized by Queen Victoria’s marriage and is being increasingly adopted at various locations around the globe. With the introduction of the Internet into every corner of the globe people are taking more and more inspiration from other cultures than ever before and the idea of a “normal” wedding is becoming more ambiguous.
