Nature lovers will find plenty to marvel at in the Azores, but the otherworldly volcanic landscape of São Miguel Island’s Sete Cidades is one of the archipelago’s most magnificent natural wonders.

Description

Sete Cidades has several walking trails, including a circuit of the dormant volcano’s rim, and routes leading down to the water’s edge. One of the best views of the lakes is from the King’s View (Vista do Rei) lookout, named after King D. Carlos and Queen D. Amélia to celebrate their visit to the island in 1901. Alternatively, take in the view by car or all-terrain vehicle—or join a guided tour with transport included.
