Overview

Folgaria is a comune in Trentino in the northern Italian region Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, located about 15 kilometers southeast of Trento. As of 31 December 2013, it had a population of 3,193 and an area of 71 square kilometers.

Description

Together with the quarters' Costa, Serrada, Guardia, Mezzomonte, San Sebastiano, Carbonare and Nosellari, Folgaria is one of the most famous holiday resorts.

The municipal area of Folgaria, which is inhabited by 3,200 citizens, is located at 1,150 m asl.



The ski circuits “Skitour dei Forti”, part of the Skirama Dolomiti, provides some 53 km of ski runs, 9 ski lifts, and a total of 50 km of cross-country runs. A true paradise for skiing, snowboarding, ski-touring, tobogganing, ice skating, snowshoeing, and much more…



Summer turns Folgaria into a popular holiday resort, especially with families and children. A number of sports and relaxation opportunities are waiting for you, from lovely walks past colorful meadows, woods, and lakes too numerous sports facilities. Worth seeing is also the Botanic Gardens of Passo Coe, featuring a rich flora and fauna and introducing you to the morphology and karstic phenomena of the area.



The Folgaria high plateau makes you indulge in its eventful history. Around 1150 AD Folgaria was declared “Magnifica comunità” by the Bishop of Trento and thus became more autonomous. Afterward, the high plateau got in the circle of influence of Venice and returned to the Austrian dynasty. Also, the front line of WWI traversed the municipal territory and for this reason, Austria-Hungary had three fortresses built, which still exist today: Forte Cherle, Dosso del Sommo di Serrada, and Forte Sommo Alto.



Folgaria is one of the villages that have been honored for their resistance in the Nazi period. Every year on August 15 inhabitants of this village commemorate the massacre of the Zonta alpine pasture at Passo Coe, in which 17 people were shot by the Nazis in 1944.
